Learning Outcomes
Purpose
This course is designed to equip the student with knowledge and skills and to promote attitudes to enable them to practise at a beginning level within the area of nursing in the community.
Key Themes
Health Promotion; Health Education; Nursing Assessment; Management of Chronic Conditions; and Prevention / Management of Communicable Diseases.
On successful completion the student will be able to:
1. Identify the historical influences on contemporary nursing practice and current service delivery
2. Apply knowledge of pathophysiology to care for client in the community setting
3. Describe characteristics of health and health promotion within the context of community nursing practice
4. Demonstrate utilisation of a range of assessment tools
5. Utilise assessment findings as the basis for the planning, delivering and evaluation of care
6. Identify strategies that enable the nurse to deal with ethical issues
7. Analyse and respond to contextual factors in the socio-political environment that impact on clients, their families/whānau and the
community
8. Demonstrate culturally safe care in the community setting
9. Describe the features and treatment approaches of the common disorders encountered in the community setting
10. Describe the role of the nurse within the community context
11. Apply knowledge of pharmacology to care for clients in the community setting
12. Demonstrate a range of therapeutic skills and strategies appropriate to the context of care
13. Utilise research and best available evidence in clinical decision making and client care
14. Identify a range of health resources available to nurses, clients and their family/whānau/community and analyse
their appropriateness for use in specific situations
15. Demonstrate competence in the prescribed NCNZ competencies related to this course
16. Apply knowledge and demonstrate understanding of impairment within community nursing practice
17. Demonstrate the knowledge required to deliver a safe and effective vaccination programme
